Facts about the city of Smyrna

Smyrna is a charming city in Georgia that is known for its classic Southern appeal and friendly locals. Situated less than 20 miles northwest of Atlanta, this community is an ideal place for residents who enjoy a suburban lifestyle without being too far removed from the big-city atmosphere. People from all walks of life have found solace living in the community’s family-friendly neighborhoods and are happy to call the city home.

A Brief History

When I decided to sell my house fast in Smyrna, I was amazed by how much my real estate agent knew about the local history. Once the pioneer settlement and the site of a religious encampment in the 1800s, the city has experienced an eventful history that helped shape its character. The community survived two Civil War battles and became officially incorporated as a city in 1872. Agriculture was a major part of local life until the 1940s, when an aircraft plant was built to produce B-29 bombers that were used by the U.S. military during World War II. After taking the groundbreaking step of electing a woman as mayor in 1946, the city experienced a population boom with a fourfold increase by the end of the 1950s. This prompted city officials to improve the community’s infrastructure to accommodate the influx of new residents. Today, the city is home to families, business professionals and retirees who do their part to make the community a great place to live for everyone.

Demographics

According to a 2016 U.S. Decennial Census estimate, the city’s population totals approximately 56,664 residents, which represents around a 10-percent increase since 2010. Most of these people consist of African-American and white families, but there is also a mix of Asian and Hispanic residents living within the city. The local median household income is $66,896, which is up from $47,572 in 2000. More than 90 percent of the city’s residents have at least a high school diploma.

Education

The community’s public school system works to provide a solid education for every child. King Springs Elementary and Teasley Elementary are among the city’s best schools and have established healthy foundations for early learning. Other notable local public schools include Griffin Middle School and Campbell High School. There is also the option of sending children to private schools such as the Covered Bridge Academy and Covenant Christian School. Fortis College and the nearby Chattahoochee Technical College provide opportunities in higher education.

Transportation

Public bus service is managed by CobbLinc and includes routes to many points throughout the city and other parts of Cobb County and Greater Atlanta. Residents who drive their own vehicles regularly take Interstate 285, Cobb Parkway and other major thoroughfares that pass through the city to reach their destinations.

Medical Services

WellStar Windy Hill Hospital in nearby Marietta is where locals often choose to go to receive treatment from doctors who specialize in cardiology, internal medicine and cancer care. Northside Hospital Atlanta is another medical center in the area that provides top-quality health care services. Residents who require behavioral health care services can visit Ridgeview Institute to take part in the addiction recovery and adult and youth psychiatric programs. Children’s at Ivy’s Walk is part of the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta network and is staffed by pediatricians who provide care to sick and injured children.

Weather

The city’s weather conditions are similar to those found in Atlanta and other communities throughout this part of Georgia. The lowest temperatures in the winter can sometimes drop into the 30s but rarely fall below freezing levels. Summer temperatures typically reach into the 80s but can sometimes surpass 100 degrees. Mild and pleasant weather conditions occur throughout much of autumn. The favorable spring climate promotes the growth of jonquil flowers in many of the local gardens, which is why Smyrna is often referred to as the “Jonquil City.” Rainfall is mostly dispersed throughout the year evenly with July being the wettest month.

Local Attractions

In addition to being a great place to live, the city boasts several attractions that add further appeal to the community. The Fox Creek Golf Course and Driving Range is where many golfers go to perfect their game. Market Village is an open-air business and entertainment center where many residents and visitor like to gather. Bikers and joggers can often be seen along the Silver Comet Trail when the weather is pleasant. The Concord Covered Bridge is a historical landmark that has withstood the test of time. Notable city parks include Tolleson Park, Heritage Park and Rose Garden Park. Many people attend music concerts and other live shows at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. The Six Flags Over Georgia theme park is less than 15 miles from the city center.

Smyrna Real Estate

The excellent property values allowed me to sell my house fast in Smyrna. As of March 2018, Smyrna’s median home value is $257,900 and is expected to increase another 4.9 percent over the next year. The average home listing price is $363,834 with most homes selling for around $271,600. The average monthly home rental rate is $1,500. Delinquent mortgages make up less than one percent of the mortgages in the city, which is less than the national average.

Many of the city’s homes are spacious in size and perfect for large families. Newer and older homes are regularly listed for sale in some of the city’s most desirable neighborhoods. Some of the best homes were designed to have a classic Southern architectural style complete with large foyers, lavish staircases and porches.

There are also many safe neighborhoods in the city where parents can raise their children in a peaceful, family-friendly environment. Some of the safest local neighborhoods include Pebblebrook Estates, Gilmore and the area around Anderson Drive and Westwood Circle NE.
